About

Kaippully Vishnu-Vettakkaran Kshetram is situated in Melattur in Malappuram district of Kerala. Maha Vishnu is the presiding deity of this temple which is believed to be around 250-300 years old. The sub-deities are Vettakkaran, Thiruvalayanad Bhagavathy, Lord Ganapathy and Sree Dharmashasta. It's the general belief that prayers to Maha Vishnu will lead to spiritual upliftment, while prayers to Vettakkaran is beneficial for material aspirations. The rituals in this temple are based mainly on tantric fundamentals.

The Sreekovil (Sanctum Sanctorum) and the Mughamandapam are made of black stone, while the external wall is constructed using Laterite bricks. This gives the temple a rare charm of its own. The extended temple walls encircle the sub-deities and a large temple pond.

The main festivals associated with the temple are the Kalam Paatu and the Bhagavatha saptaham, which happens every year.

Currently the affairs of the temple are being taken care of by a management committee.

History

In the beginning, the Kaippully Vishnu-Vettakkaran Kshetram was under the combined guardianship of Brahmins, Kovilakams and Madhyabrahmanas (Iyers). The first custodians were the Njarakulangara Pisharam family who were based in Melattur. The passage of time saw a decline in the fortunes of the family until their entire lineage was no more. Consequently, the temple and all its assets, including landed properties were annexed to the Cherukara Pisharam family. This family was not based in Melattur but in Cherukara near Perinthalmanna.

Many years later, a Palakkad based Brahmin called Appathaswamy, arrived at Melattur to expand his blanket business. Over the years his business flourished and he accumulated immense land and wealth and attained an influential position in society. Due to all these factors, the Cherukara Pisharam family handed over the reigns of the temple to Appathaswamy. Later, he got together with four Brahmin families and formed a Samooham (Trust), in order to plan and execute the expansion programs of the temple. Many important changes were brought into effect through these renovation efforts. New Upadevathas (sub-deities) were installed within the temple precincts. They were Vettakkaran, Thiruvalayanad Bhagavathy, Lord Ganapathy and Sree Dharmashasta. The external walls were extended to accommodate these Paradevathas and a huge temple pond was also constructed.

Later, Appathaswamy’s son Venkatachalam-I who was an ardent devotee successfully took over the running of the temple and it was a prosperous time for the Kaippully Vishnu-Vettakkaran temple. Venkatachalam’s adopted son Konthaswamy was not able to fulfill all the responsibilities and so the Cherukara Pisharam family handed over the temple duties to the Samooham.

At that time, two important conditions were agreed upon. One was that the Kalam Paatu for Vettakkaran would be conducted at least once every alternate year. The second condition was that the Flag-off (Koora) of the festival would be done by the oldest living member of the Cherukara Pisharam family. The rituals were conducted according to the conditions agreed upon and all was well. But as time passed, differences of opinion started cropping up within the temple management.

It was in such a situation that the local residents took matters into their own hands and decided to form a Management Committee to revive the erstwhile glory of the temple. Call it coincidence or a sign from the Almighty, a member of the erstwhile Samooham came forward at this time and made a substantial financial contribution for the restoration works of the temple. He had come to know of the temple and its current situation during an astrological consultation. Under this member’s leadership and the collective efforts of the Governing Public Committee, a number of modifications were made and now the temple has regained its former position. Regular pujas are being conducted and devotees flock to the Kaippuly Vishnu-Vettakkaran temple.
